Kimono House is owned and managed by Leanne O’Sullivan who first travelled to Japan in 1989 where she lived and worked for 5 years. During this time she became interested in Japanese textiles especially the kimono.
In 2004 Leanne launched Kimono House from her 2-bedroom apartment in East Melbourne whilst she looked for suitable premises in the CBD. Memories of finding hidden treasures in Japan at the end of a laneway or up a flight of stairs influenced her decision to find somewhere similar. Then a space in the creative environment of the Nicholas Building was offered.
A wide variety of hand-selected new and vintage textiles and kimono can be found at Kimono House alongside their own label in exclusive fashion accessories. Craft classes and cultural experiences are also offered including kimono dressing and tea ceremony.
Regular customers include fashion designers, local crafty types, tourists and Japanese expats looking for kimono, textiles or a Japanese cultural experience.
